When Is the Best Time to Paint Your Home's Exterior in Idaho?

September 9, 2026 NR Painting

Exterior paint is only as good as the conditions it goes on in. Paint that's applied too cold, too hot or right before a storm can fail to cure properly, and that shows up later as peeling, blistering or uneven color.

Temperature matters most. Every exterior paint lists a minimum application temperature on the can, and the surface — not just the air — needs to stay above it while the paint dries, including overnight. In the Treasure Valley, that usually makes late spring through early fall the main exterior season.

Too hot can be a problem too. On a summer afternoon in Boise, a south- or west-facing wall in full sun can get much hotter than the air. Paint that dries too fast can show lap marks and won't bond as well, so we follow the shade around the house — working each side when the sun is off it.

Watch the forecast. Fresh paint needs dry hours before rain or heavy dew. Fall mornings can be cold and damp, so in the shoulder seasons we start later and finish earlier to give each coat the time it needs.

Prep doesn't depend on the season, but it decides how long the job lasts. Washing off dirt and chalky residue, scraping and sanding loose paint, caulking gaps around windows and trim, and priming bare wood are what let the new finish stand up to our dry summers and freeze-thaw winters.

If you're planning an exterior repaint, it's worth getting an estimate early — the best weeks of the season book up. Call NR Painting at (737) 323-0001 for a free exterior estimate anywhere from Boise to Caldwell, Emmett and Idaho City.
